Containing what the reader may, perhaps, expect to find in it. This course looks at playwright, journalist, novelist, and man of law Henry Fielding 91制片厂 鈥檚 approach to authorship and authority. It begins with Fielding 91制片厂 鈥檚 satirical drama, The Author 91制片厂 鈥檚 Farce (1730) and considers institutional forms of censorship including the Theatrical Licensing Act (1737) and their effects upon Fielding 91制片厂 鈥檚 career. The course then moves to consider Fielding 91制片厂 鈥檚 major novel, The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling (1749) in tandem with associated literary scholarship.

Evaluation will be based on your performance across four categories:
- class quizzes / response papers (2 x 15=30%)
- oral presentation with paper (1x 20%)
- term exam (35%)
- participation in discussion (15%)
